Wood Species Information

Here are some of the most common species Ferche uses in their moulding products.

Alder & Knotty Alder

Alder, with its lower cost, has sometimes been referred to as the "poor man's cherry". It has a similar color and graining, but is considerably lighter and softer. Alder has a short length structure and will be available in mouldings 10' long and shorter, and, widths up to 6". Clear alder may have limited availability and may contain tight pin knots without being considered defective. Knotty Alder can have broken knots with holes up to the size of a dime.

Birch

Yellow Birch
Birch

Yellow Birch has a short length structure, the longest pieces being 12' with the majority of lengths being in the 8' - 10' range. Available in widths up to 6". Birch is a hardwood of medium density and moderate price. When staining, a conditioner is recommended to reduce the "blotchiness" which tends to occur with this species.

Cherry

Cherry

The red colored lumber associated with cherry comes from that part of the tree called the "heartwood" (center portion of the tree). The cream colored part of the log, found on the perimeter portion of the tree, is called sapwood. The lumber we purchase for mouldings is the highest grade, but still contains some of the lighter sapwood. Therefore, the mouldings we sell will have small amount of light colored streaking. Small, dark streaks (pitch and gum) are also common characteristics. Cherry may have some longer lengths up to 14', but only in small quantities.

Cherry is one of the more expensive, commonly used hardwoods, but also one of the most beautiful and treasured. Cherry, when left unstained and finished with a clear finish will age to a rich reddish brown. This aging or darkening process happens to all species, but in cherry, gives the wood a substantially different richness that the new wood doesn't possess.

Hickory

Hickory is often associated with a less formal, rustic decorating style. The main characteristic about this species is the wide range of color found within each piece and from piece to piece. Most often the product is finished in a clear coat to emphasize this characteristic. Hickory's length structure is good with some 16' lumber with heavy concentration in the 8' -12' range. Widths up to 7" are available.

Maple - Hard & Soft

Maple Soft

Hard Maple is dense, strong and dent resistant. It has a good length and width structure. The hard maple used by Ferche has a very consistent white/cream color. When using maple mouldings with maple doors, generally the match between the two is better with hard maple. Maple, both hard and soft, requires the use of a conditioner prior to staining to minimize the "blotchy" effect that can occur with maple.

Soft Maple is less dense, softer and not as dent resistant as hard maple. The price for Select soft maple is nearly as high as hard maple.

Oak

Red Oak
Red Oak

Ferche gets its red oak from sawmills near its concentration yard in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, in the heart of the Appalachian lumber region. This area produces trees which obtain the the best combination of good length structure and good color. Red oak coming from Southern Lumber regions (not used by Ferche) will have a much broader color range, with more gray and pinks, which puts it outside the range of the preferred wheat color. The red oak that Ferche processes has the best combination of length, width and color.

Poplar

Poplar

Poplar is the lowest priced hardwood that we offer. Ferche has 3 different grades of poplar to satisfy your requirements depending on the way the product will be finished. Poplar has a good length structure and is sometimes used when length is a more important criterion than species.
